What does Europe sound like? Sound composers all over Europe were called upon in an international competition to use their resources to musically capture places in Europe in five minutes. The response was overwhelming. The result was 186 soundscapes, condensed images of urban space, rhythmic montages, acoustic walks - composed panoramas that question the reference to reality or consciously play with the duality of reality and imagination. The ten winners of the competition received a new challenge as a prize: to compose a new, joint European work from their pieces in a one-week workshop under the direction of the multiple award-winning media artist Thomas Köner at the Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe.

In this 'Long Night', Götz Naleppa and Sandra Topan convey impressions of the unusual creative process in which ten artists with completely different cultural and musical backgrounds find a common work through conversations with the artists and the workshop leader, through recordings of the rehearsals and concerts as well as the final premiere. A lesson about listening - and a lesson for Europe.
