In 1935 Lowry was in the psychiatric ward of New York's Bellevue Hospital for severe drunkenness. The first version of his novella "Lunar Caustic" was written there, in which he
describes drinking experiences. In 1955 he was again in treatment, but was discharged as incurable; in 1957 he died of sleeping pill poisoning. "Lunar Caustic" was only published posthumously in 1963. Life and work made Lowry a cult figure for a growing community of readers.
