'The city, filled with unrest, stretches over the hills: a tangle of languages and touches. A maelstrom of prayers and pleas tears apart the silence of the afternoon, bells, the lamentations of the Hasidim, the sirens in the streets and the shouts of the merchants cut through the neighbourhoods.
This is how Ilana Zuckermann describes her dream city of Jerusalem. The holy city is the subject of her composition "Elegy for a dream city", which she presented as a sound installation on a Danube ship at the Ars Acustica in Linz in 1998. Götz Naleppa composed the radio version "Ilana's Elegy" from the material of this sound installation.
