In 1935, Lowry was in the psychiatric ward of New York's Bellevue Hospital due to severe alcoholism. He wrote the first version of his novella "Lunar Caustic", in which he describes his
describes his experiences as a drinker. After receiving treatment again in 1955, he was discharged as incurable and died of sleeping pill poisoning in 1957. "Lunar Caustic" was only published posthumously in 1963. Lowry's life and work made him a cult figure for a growing community of readers.
