Billi, a former top athlete from the former GDR, returns to freedom after 13 years of psychiatric isolation in his hometown. After the fall of the Wall (of which he only learns later), the doors of the institution have also opened for him.

The small group of honorees who, with the sharp tones of a brass band, would most like to blow away the shadows of the past at Billi’s reception seem determined: They all have dirt on their hands. The man from Deutsche Bank with a market-economy perspective on the future is looking at them with scrutiny.

Welcome. But Billi wants to know exactly who tied the strings 13 years ago that led him to become a so-called refugee from the Republic.
